The history of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu goes back to the original teacher of the Gracie family, Mitsuyo Maeda. He received training in Kodokan, Japan, the birthplace of Judo.
Kodokan Judo was the premier judo style from Japan, its nation of origin: it possesses many stand up throwing methods A man named Mataemon Tanabe challenged the Kodokan around the Nineteenth Century. He was in charge of traditional Jiu Jitsu, the Fusen Ryu. The Fusen Ryu fighters were experts in one thing that the Kodokan lacked: fighting on the ground. The importances of dramatic ground fighting techniques are best exemplified by the Kodokan-Fusen Ryu matches. Therefore the Judo initiator, Jigoro Kano invited Tanabe on the way to instruct ground grappling. After Tanabe’s instruction, the ground fighting technique became famous at the Kodokan, and all of the students began to practice it.
Around the same time, Mitsuyo Maeda was trained in Judo and became a martial arts prodigy. He was the member Kodokan. Kano selected people to travel abroad, sharing his artistry with everyone. Maeda was one of them. Maeda was sent to U.S.A. in the year 1904 to get the word out about the Kodokan form of Judo. He traveled the world and saw beautiful places like Great Britain, northern Europe, Cuba, and Mexico. He fought different matches with many wrestlers, boxers, savate fighters and various other martial artists. Maeda decided to settle in Brazil in November 1914. Maeda had an unbeatable record with 1000 fights under his belt as a pro fighter.
