If you are constantly feeling a need for speed and dying for a real thrill ride, you should head for the open with kite boarding. Though you will find this sport mostly in the US, but these days it has become so popular that you will find this in other parts of the world as well.
So, what is kite boarding? If you do not have any idea what kite boarding is all about, then, read on.
Kiteboarding is actually an extreme sport using powerful, controllable kites to propel riders on in-line skates, off-road skates or mountain boards at speeds up to 60 mph across parking lots, desert dry lakes, grassy fields and sandy beaches. If you want to fly like a bird without a care in the world, feel the wind blow into your face and soar high above the ground, kite boarding is the perfect bet for you.
The kitesurf boards originated in the Eastern Coast of USA in 1990 when sport kite enthusiasts began kite skating, or Rollerkiting, at various local festivals there. Large and vacant parking lots were the most popular venue for practicing this sport in those early days. Early kiteskating attempts involved the use of Rollerblades and four-line controllable kites made of parafoil.
The subsequent kite buggy explosion saw a waning of the general interest and enthusiasm over kite boarding. However, it made a powerful comeback in 1992 under the pioneering efforts of Bob Childs who built a pair of off-road in-line skates using Rollerblade boots and scooter wheels, named the ‘Wheels of Doom’, which proved very effective in reigniting the general interest in kite boarding. Recently, ATB skateboard riders have joined the league of kite skaters. Kite Skateboarding daredevils use mountain-boards to zip around on multi-terrain surfaces, usually at a lesser speed than Kite Skaters. However, kite skateboarding offers a better opportunity for performing jump tricks and other trick moves. In fact, kite boarding owes much of its popularity to the fact that it is actually quite a spectacular sport to watch.
There have been many changes and improvements in the manufacturing of these boards. Today, if you wish to buy the equipment, you can easily get them at the local sports superstore or on the Internet – and it is available in large quantities as well. However, one must remember that kite boarding is a demanding sport and requires that one uses only the best and the strongest of gear to ensure maximum safety. You must always give the most importance to your safety. Like in most other sports, the quality of the kitesurf boards that you use will have a significant bearing upon your performance.
